Who
do you think should be OneWorld's "Person of 2007"? Maybe it's someone
who was working at the grassroots to bring change to their community or
their country. Maybe someone working to improve governments' policies
towards marginalized people. Or someone who raised issues that others
were neglecting.
Al Gore came in second place last year, after a close vote where OneWorlders chose Dr. Rashad Zidan and the women of Iraq as the People of the Year, for "their tireless work to keep families together through the terrors of war." Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf certainly deserves some consideration this year for what she's done to bring stability to Liberia after years of war. What about Muhammad Yunus, the "father" of microfinance? Or Matt Flannery, the founder of kiva.org, which is bringing microfinance into the living rooms of the United States.
It
doesn't have to be a single person either. Is there a corporation, an
organization, or other group you'd like to nominate? The founders of Skype were nominated last year, for "helping connect people from all around the world." So was the town of Kinsale, Ireland, which has adopted a plan to wean itself
off of fossil fuels. How about Bill Clinton? Hillary?
We'll leave it there. Now you tell us who you would nominate for OneWorld's Person of 2007 -- and why! Leave your nomination(s) in the comment fields below by Wednesday, December 19.

Please, please, don't nominate someone who is already a celebrity. This is a chance to do some real homework and elevate one of the many heroes of global development and help her or him advance and have a greater impact. "Piling on" doesn't help and wastes an important opportunity. But finding an someone not yet recognized means real due diligence. Please don't take the easy way.

Name: Evelina Taunyte, Candycactus
Country: from Lithuania, acting in Georgia, Caucasus Issues of focus: consequent individual action and life style in terms of social and ecological sustainability, social politics as a communicational art process instead of post-colonialistic development policies, instead of creating institutional dependencies empowering local people strengthening the local DIY culture and initiative Why should the person be nominated? Candycactus, an artist and youth worker from Lithuania decided to commit herself to the ecological footprint and continuing her international youthwork going to the places of youth work action by bike and living with as little Earth resources as possible. After traveling from Lithuania through Balkans and Turkey in 2006 she decided to bring more opportunities to a Muslim, isolated mountain village in Georgia, a mainly Christian country in Caucasus. Recently she initiated and set up with the village population a youth and community centre. The idea of the centre is that local people and the ones comming from abroad share their skills and resources beyond money. Everyone coming from abroad does not have to bring money, but an idea to make a workshop to share his or her skills - teaching English, computers, theater, etc. The philosophy of Candycactus is based on the idea that the world can change in terms of ecology and social justice only if we change our personal habits. Development policy could take place on the personal level through exchanging our skills and resources beyond the established fundgivers and organisations that tend to create new dependencies. Every person can make a social and ecological change. Candycactus does. Re: OneWorld's Person of 2007 - Nominate a Trailblazer

A Transition Initiative is a community that is unleashing its own latent collective genius to look Peak Oil and Climate Change squarely in the eye and to discover and implement ways to address this BIG question: "for all those aspects of life that this community needs in order to sustain itself and thrive, how do we significantly increase resilience (to mitigate the effects of Peak Oil) and drastically reduce carbon emissions (to mitigate the effects of Climate Change)?" The resulting coordinated range of projects across all these areas of life leads to a collectively designed energy descent pathway. The community also recognises two crucial points: • that we used immense amounts of creativity, ingenuity and adaptability on the way up the energy upslope, and that there's no reason for us not to do the same on the downslope • if we collectively plan and act early enough there's every likelihood that we can create a way of living that's significantly more connected, more vibrant and more in touch with our environment than the oil-addicted treadmill that we find ourselves on today. Name: Lois Marie Gibbs
Country: U.S.A. Organization (optional): Center for Health, Environment and Justice Issue(s) of Focus: Environmental health, toxic chemicals Why should this person be nominated? Thirty years after she first began organizing her neighbors into the Love Canal Homeowners Association to demand relocation from the nation's most notorious toxic waste dump, Lois Gibbs continues to assist countless local at-risk groups annually. Lois’ passion, drive and experience push her to train and mentor those living in contaminated areas about how they can prevent further harm from happening to them and their communities. To date, over 10,000 groups have been mentored by Lois’ organization. Whether it is through grassroots organizing, coalition-building, skills training, policy advocacy, or consumer campaigns, Lois provides strategic leadership and vision to the national grassroots movement for environmental health justice. American environmental regulations are not based on how much harm can be avoided but rather on the highest "acceptable" amount of exposure and health risk. As 2008 will mark the 30th anniversary of Love Canal, the fruits of Lois’ labor have begun to pay off. We are now witnessing the shift in the climate of public opinion -- a shift toward an approach that is based on preventing environmentally based health-related harm for individuals and the community at-large. There is no question that such a dramatic shift is directly attributable to Lois – the mother of Superfund -- Gibb’s tireless efforts and unmatched concern. Country: U.S. Organization (optional): Search for Common Ground Issue(s) of Focus: Conflict Resolution & Transformation; Peacebuilding Why should this person be nominated? John Marks founded Search for Common Ground in 1982 at a time when conflict resolution was not recognized as an academic field of study or as an established concentration of work. John and his wife Susan Collin Marks have greatly contributed to the development of the conflict resolution field and leading the growth of Search for Common Ground into one of the world’s most respected NGOs working in the field. SFCG is particularly known for its pioneering use of radio and television to transform conflict. SFCG’s mission was and still is to transform the way the world deals with conflict, away from adversarial approaches towards cooperative solutions. John and Susan are regularly called upon by governments and institutions to advise and consult on peacebuilding; and they continue to inspire individuals, groups, and audiences through their own example of walking the talk and “being the change” that we want to see in the world. Examples of what SFCG does in the world: SFCG has been acknowledged for its contribution to helping Burundi emerge from the decades-long cycle of violence between Hutu and Tutsi; for helping to build the election monitoring and media infrastructure in Sierra Leone that contributed to the country’s first national democratic elections; for maintaining the people-to-people ties between the U.S. and Iran despite the hostile diplomatic environment; for leading the consensus process that resulted in the Healthcare Coalition for the Uninsured report and recommendations to Congress. Name: Dr. Vandana Shiva
Country: India Organization (optional): Navdanya Issue of Focus: Local and biodiverse organic fair-trade agriculture as a solution to climate chaos. Why should this person be nominated? Dr. Shiva established Navdanya, which means Nine Seeds in Hindi, in 1987. Though this organization, Dr. Shiva has been working directly with peasant farmers and rural communities who suffer most from poverty and hunger. Navdanya has trained more than 250,000 farmers from over 2000 villages in seed conservation and organic chemical-free farming. Their community seed banks play an important role in increasing local food security in times of increasing climate instability. Hundreds of varieties of rice, millet, pulse, oilseed, and vegetables have been conserved. Flood resistant rice varieties have recently been protected and distributed in regions hit by famine due to flooding caused by climate instability. Over the last year her achievements have included: - Bringing global attention to the land conflicts and rise in food prices brought about by the expansion of agrofuels, through national and international campaigns. Dr. Shiva has been instrumental in developing a movement and national convention against land grabbing. - Initiating a Bija Yatra (Seed Pilgrimage) in May 2006 to protest at the corporate monopolisation of India’s seed sector. This is locking thousands of farmers into a life of debt, which caused more than 20,000 farmers in Andhra Pradesh to commit suicide. The march marked 150 years of India’s struggle for freedom. - Giving indigenous seeds to over 10,000 farmers and widows of suicide victims to help them revive their agriculture. These farmers took a pledge to conserve, rejuvenate and protect the diversity of their foods and farming. - Helping villages to adopt organic agriculture and thereby create GMO free, patent free, debt free and suicide free villages. - Helping villages create ecological, organic, just and fair trade. For example, in Vidharbha farmers have been given assistance to create fair trade for their organic cotton, thereby helped them to break out of the vicious circle of debt. - Organising a National Convention to resist the corporate hijacking of the Indian retail sector and Indian land, and framing an alternative food security policy through participatory dialogues with small farmers and farmers’ movements. There are few people who are doing more to practically demonstrate the value of traditional organic and biodiverse farming methods as a solution to global climate change and the corporate takeover of our food systems, whilst vigorously lobbying for change at all levels. Dr. Vandana Shiva is a truly remarkable individual and a worthy candidate for this award. Re: OneWorld's Person of 2007 - Nominate a Trailblazer

Country: USA Organization (optional): WaterPartners International (water.org) Issue(s) of Focus: Safe drinking water and sanitation for people in developing countries. Why should this person be nominated? Gary White, co-founder and executive director of WaterPartners International, has devoted his life to helping people in developing countries obtain access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. Almost one in six people on earth don’t have a safe, steady source of water for their daily needs. Lack of safe water can lead to disease, poverty and death. Since his first visit to Guatemala as a graduate student (where he witnessed first-hand what life is like with out safe water), Gary has worked tirelessly to find the best avenue for addressing global water needs. This response has ranged from conducting academic research, to working alongside people in the developing world as they constructed water supply systems, to serving as an advisor and consultant to other organizations in the sector, to co-founding WaterPartners International. Gary is also a founding board member of the Millennium Water Alliance and Water Advocates. A true innovator, Gary’s first creation was WaterPartners’ project model; his most recent innovation is WaterPartners’ WaterCredit Initiative, which makes small loans for water and sanitation to poor people without access to traditional credit markets. Gary’s vision and determination has led to WaterPartners transforming the lives of more than 165,000 people in eight countries with access to safe drinking water and sanitation. Name: Molly Melching and the Women of Senegal and West Africa
Country: Senegal, West Africa Organization (optional): Tostan Issue(s) of Focus: Human Rights Empowerment and Community-Led Development This past August marked the ten-year anniversary of the first declaration of the abandonment of female genital cutting in Senegal. Thousands from neighboring villages, regions and countries gathered in the village of Malicounda Bambara to celebrate this historic declaration and announce a renewed effort to see the practice ended across West Africa. Among those in attendance was Molly Melching, the founder of Tostan, the organization whose program has been at the core of this growing movement. Ten years ago, neither Molly nor the women of Malicounda Bambara knew their decision to end the harmful practice would lead to a nation-wide grassroots movement to completely abandon FGC in Senegal and across West Africa. Today, nearly half of all villages that once practiced FGC in Senegal have made similar declarations and the movement continues to grow in both in Senegal and in several other West African countries. Many attribute Tostan’s success not only to Molly’s commitment to human rights, but to her unique and innovative way of approaching education and community development. Working exclusively in local languages and reinforcing traditional means of communiciation such as song, poetry, and theater, Tostan’s program engages participants through holistic and inclusive methods. The Tostan Community Empowerment Program equips participants with the knowledge and tools to discuss issues important to them and become changemakers in their communities. Amazingly, the abandonment of FGC is just one of many results to have come out of the program. Thousands of communities have abandoned child marriage, led campaigns for education and health, and brought about many other results. The Tostan organization has been widely recognized this past year and was awarded two international prizes in 2007, one for its pioneering work in literacy and one for its ability to relieve human suffering. However, both Molly Melching, a woman who defers any and all recognition to the populations she serves, and the women of Malicounda Bambara have yet to be singled out for their amazing achievements. Molly Melching has lived and worked in Senegal for over 33 years and has dedicated her life to education and development in Africa. Through her work, Molly has empowered Malicounda Bambara and thousands of other communities in West Africa to stand up for themselves and for their communities. Of course, Molly and the many women leading the movement for the FGC abandonment are the last people to ask for recognition—they are busy making sure their vision becomes a reality. However, we know of no one who deserves recognition more—both to document their amazing past achievements and to reinforce the work they take on in the future, as this movement spreads. For this reason, we nominate Molly Melching and the women of Malicounda Bambara as OneWorld’s “Person of 2007” and hope their historic and inspiring work will be recognized for being exactly that. I second the momination of Congressman and Democratic Presidential Candidate Dennis Kucinich.
We have plenty of politicians that change their views on issues because they think it will get them more votes in the next election. Dennis Kucinich voted against the Iraq War Resolution because he took the time to read the reports and understand that the reasons to go into Iraq were based on lies. This is just one example of his courage, his intelligence, a committment to truth and honesty, and loyalty to his values. Re: Re: OneWorld's Person of 2007 - Nominate a Trailblazer

The organisation is totally youth-led, and so are the activities, although adult experts offer their time and skills free of charge to complete our educational offering. YAC has organised several free online courses and other activities, and runs on a very limited budget, all the teachers and adult experts serving on a voluntary basis (including officers from the UN and Amnesty International, among others). Because of its groundbreaking programs and activities, YAC has been dubbed ‘best practice for youth empowerment’ worldwide, and has received several praises and awards from organisations the likes of the UN, the World Bank, Oxfam, Ashoka, Nokia, the Council of Europe and many others. Selene started YAC aged 22, with no track record, support, experience or money. Believing in the fact that young people have the courage, boldness and commitment to bring about the change they so often wish to see in their communities and the world at large, she decided to follow her call and do something out of her idea, and so set off for this journey on her own. She has always believed in the power of young people to improve the world’s situation and speak up for themselves and the future generations, and has acted resolutely to help young people worldwide unlocking their potential: thanks to her, young people in Pakistan successfully lobbied to have the first youth policy drafted and implemented, young people in Kenya spread knowledge about HIV/AIDS biking around surrounding villages, and young people in the Philippines helped training local activists to document Human Rights abuses in indigenous communities. She is an Action Partner of the International Youth Parliament (IYP), a member of the International Advisory Board of ICCHRA, a founding partner of the Committee of Expertise on ‘Youth Social Technopreneurship’ of the UN Alliance of ICTs and Development (UN-GAID), and an observer to the National Youth Policy drafting process at the Italian Youth Forum, among others. She contributed to a few published works on youth inclusion and participation and youth policies, and has been profiled in several national and international media outlets for her work, including OneWorld, Associated Press and the World Bank 2007 Development Report. She has organised national and international consultations on youth participation on behalf of UNESCO and the World Bank, and served as a keynote speaker in major national and international youth events in Europe and the US. She was included in ‘Fighting for our Future: Tribute to Young Women inspiring Change’ by MADRE, and received awards such as the “Young Woman of the Year Award” in 2004 by the European Academy of Civil Society, ‘Change Maker of the Month’ by Ashoka - the leading organisation supporting social entrepreneurs worldwide – the ‘Youth Action Net Award’ by the International Youth Foundation, ‘Youth Messenger for Dialogue between Cultures and Religions’ of the Anna Lindh Foundation and others. Following elections, she now coordinates the Youth Caucus at the UN Commission for Sustainable Development, where she works to give young people a platform to voice their concerns and speak up for themselves on matters that affect us all, like climate change, water, desertification and sustainable development. Selene truly represents the energy, commitment and dedication of today’s young people to create a more equitable, safer and just world for all. Re: OneWorld's Person of 2007 - Nominate a Trailblazer

Former NYC Department of Youth Services Commissioner Richard Murphy made a world of difference in my life. He helped me claim my voice by empowering me as a youth advocate and champion of quality services for young people. I'll never forget, at age 15, when I was invited to an Interagency Coordinating Council meeting. Murphy turned to me and asked me to share my thoughts with the decision makers in the room. It was life changing. I found my calling by simply speaking up with my opinion and claiming my rightful place by taking up space. One day, I plan to run for public office to ensure that all young people have input in policies that affect them.

Name: Wanda Imasuen
Country: US Organization (optional): Families United for Racial & Economic Equality (FUREE) Issue(s) of Focus: Child Care Organizing Why should this person be nominated? Wanda has started in our organization as a member and is now a staff organizer on the Child Care Campaign. This campaign focuses on preventing the closure of day care centers that serve low-income families of color in New York City. The state of New York passed policies that threated to close more than 500 day cares serving thousands of infants, toddlers and preschoolers particularly from poor families and single mothers who are entering or re-entering the work force. Without day care, many families are forced to remain in poverty and, in some cases, violate welfare-to-work mandates that threaten the stopping of necessary public assistance and food stamps. Wanda has organized more than 300 day care and family day care workers around this issue and has brought the particularities that negatively affect inner city day care centers to the forefront of policy makers and other communities. To date hundreds of day care centers were saved and she continues to prevent the closure of hundreds more. Previously, Wanda has also organized day care workers to receive pay raises after having no raise in over 10 years. Re: OneWorld's Person of 2007 - Nominate a Trailblazer

Rep Dennis Kucinich
USA Congressman, Presidential Candidate health care, labour and environmental rights, justice, peace Dennis Kucinich has tirelessly worked for improving the conditions of people in the U.S. and the rest of the world. Along with other reasons mentioned, Dennis has been a trailblazer (a modern one), introducing HR676 (universal single payer health care), HR888 (Dept. of Peace), introduced articles of impeachment vs Dick Cheney, etc. Dennis has been a tireless and consistent advocate for justice and rights, and has not calibrated his positions for "voter popularity". He has followed his conscience and has been proven right again and again. Note that each so called "top tier" candidate have charrypicked Dennis's policies. It was clear that his exclusion from the Gannet Inc owned Des Moines Register debates on Dec 13th left a huge hole and that other candidates were left to be allowed to spout platitudes and vague "what the voters want to hear" rhetoric. Not to mention the abject poverty that Dennis pulled himself out of, that he doesn't forget where he came from, and that he one of very few members of Congress that has not lined his pockets with lobbyist money. Additionally, as a candidate, he has taken no money from PAC's and corporate interests...something that NO other candidate can say - just like Dennis being the ONLY one who voted against the War, the Patriot Act, etc. etc. Re: Re: OneWorld's Person of 2007 - Nominate a Trailblazer

The paddy farmers of Kerala's rice bowl, Kuttanad, are in a debt trap, requesting debt negotiation as to repay one loan they are taking another and thus their debt burden is swelling year after year. The net income a farmer gets was only Rs 5,625 from a hectare for his subsistence, as the family does not have any other alternative source of income.
