Two massive donations announced this week--from three of the richest families in America--are aiming to jumpstart development on the continent of Africa. Since the vast majority of Africans make their living from the land, the Rockefeller and Gates Foundations are betting that a $150 million investment to improve agricultural productivity will spark a new "Green Revolution," pulling millions out of poverty and significantly reducing hunger. For his part, George Soros has announced $50 million of new support for Millennium Villages across Africa--a revolutionary effort to show that a holistic approach to combating poverty can help communities become self-sustaining.
