I
started using Gather earlier this year. I have joined several groups,
created groups, etc. I have put together some tips for using Gather.

1. Publishing an article
Click on Publish tab at the top. It's right next to the Mail tab.
On
the last page when you publish the article, you can check off all the
boxes of the groups your article can be published to. One tip: In
order to post to a group, you have to first join the group. If you
join the group after posting the article, you can edit the article and
select the groups it should be posted to.
2. Publishing an image
When
you publish an image with an article, it will not appear under my
images. You will have to republish it by click on Publish, Publish an
image. To set an image as your icon, so it appears next to your
comments and in your page, upload the image and then go to My Images.
Click on Set as Icon under the image.
3. Finding groups to join
Click on Groups and Find Groups. To find a group, click here.

4. Connecting with people
You
can connect with people as family, friend or colleague. When you edit
your profile you can select what can be viewed by the public, family,
friend and colleague. When you publish an article you can also
indicate who can view the article, everyone, family, friend or
colleague.
5. Email notifications
You can
choose to get email notifications from the groups you joined and your
contacts. Click on My Gather, click on Settings and Mail Preferences.
6. Create a group
When
you create your own group, you can make it a public or private group.
You can also choose whether it's moderated or unmoderated. To create a
group, click on Groups, then on Create a Group. If it is for an
organization, you can upload a group banner to replace the Gather
banner at the top. To create a group, visit /createGroup.jsp.
7. Gather points
You
earn Gather points the more active you are on Gather. Whether it's
posting an article or image, creating a group, commenting on articles,
inviting people to join gather, etc. Gather does not publish exactly
how many points you get for what. To see how many points you have
click on My Gather. You can exchange your points for gift certificates
at Barnes and Noble, Uncommon Goods, etc. or donate your points to

8. Featuring articles in a group
To
feature a article you have published in your group, go to your group
and click on My Articles. Under the article headline you will
see, click on Content Settings. Check off the box "Feature this
Article in the group." You can always go back and unfeature the
article. The featured article will appear in the top section of the
group.
9. Publishing an article to a moderated group
If
you create a moderated group, even when you publish an article, you
will have to go in and approve the article before it appears in your
group.
Click on My Groups, next click on your group. Under Manage
Content, you will see the number of articles waiting for your approval.
You need to approve the article before it will appear in the group. You
can have multiple moderators for the group. To add a person as
moderator, click on Members in your group. Under the person's name,
click on Member Settings. Check off boxes under Member Permissions and
Advanced Permissions.
10. Inviting people to join Gather
If
you want to let people know about your page, you can send them the url
to your page. For example, mine is rkimages.gather.com. To invite,
people to join Gather visit here,/outsideInvite.jsp.
After they join, they can connect to you as a family, friend or colleague.
