Two massive donations
announced this week--from three of the richest
families in America--are aiming to jumpstart development
on the continent of Africa. Since the vast majority
of Africans make their living from the land, the
Rockefeller and Gates Foundations are betting
that a $150 million investment to improve agricultural
productivity will spark a new "Green Revolution,"
pulling millions out of poverty and significantly
reducing hunger. For his part, George Soros has
announced $50 million of new support for Millennium
Villages across Africa--a revolutionary effort
to show that a holistic approach to combating
poverty can help communities become self-sustaining.
