We all come across issues in our work at one point or another. Sometimes we need advice on a project we are working on. Some of these questions can be answered through different email lists, but other questions require more thought and expert feedback.

OneWorld U.S. has brought together a group of experts that can help you answer some of your questions around communications, fundraising, technology and other issues. You can submit your questions and the experts will pick and choose the questions they can answer, and post their response to the blog. Others in the OneWorld community are also welcome to share their expertise and post their suggestions.

Katya Andresen, Network for Good
  Katya Andresen develops and executes the charitable giving portal Network for Good's marketing strategy, including consumer outreach, media relations, corporate partnerships and nonprofit marketing.

Before joining Network for Good, she was Senior Vice President of Sutton Group, a marketing and communications firm supporting non-profits, government agencies, and foundations working for the social good.

Previously was a marketing consultant overseas, promoting causes ranging from civil society in Ukraine to ecotourism in Madagascar. She also worked for CARE International. She has trained hundreds of causes in effective marketing and media relations, and her marketing materials for non-profits have won national and international awards.

She is the author of the book, Robin Hood Marketing: Stealing Corporate Savvy to Sell Just Cause’s (Jossey-Bass, 2006) and was featured in the ebook, Nine Minds of Marketing. She is also author of a chapter in the upcoming book, People to People Fundraising - How Individuals and Nonprofits can Leverage the Internet for Great Causes (Wiley, 2007). Fundraising Success Magazine named her Fundraising Professional of the Year in 2007.

Katya traces her passion for good causes to the enormous social need she witnessed as a journalist prior to her work in the non-profit sector. She was a foreign correspondent for Reuters News and Television in Asia and for Associated Press, the San Francisco Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News in Africa. She has a bachelor's degree in history from Haverford College.

Lisa Chen, Fenton Communications
  Lisa Chen has more than 10 years’ experience in public interest communications on a broad range of international and domestic issues ranging from human rights to economic development. At as a senior vice president at Fenton Communications, she specializes in message development and media strategy.
Prior to Fenton, Chen was a senior account manager at Communication Works, a nonprofit communications group, where she led campaigns on affirmative action, gun violence prevention, affordable housing and public health, specifically health care access for low-income people.

Her clients have included the Global Fund for Women, Physicians for Human Rights, Corporate Accountability International and the Goldman Environmental Prize. Her work with breast cancer advocates helped increase federal funding for research into the environmental causes of breast cancer and state-funded treatment for low-income women with breast cancer in California.

A former staff writer for the San Jose Mercury News, she has written op-eds published in the New York Times, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, Boston Globe and elsewhere for numerous public figures. She is a former recipient of the Knight-Ridder minority fellowship and holds a B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and an M.F.A. in writing from the University of Iowa.

Anne Dickerson, 15 Minutes Productions
  Anne Dickerson is a co-director of 15 Minutes Productions. She has conducted communications seminars and coached senior executives on their public speaking skills since 2001.

Recent projects include the director of a new political advocacy coalition, humanitarian spokespeople in Iraq, and the president of a fiscal policy think tank.
She has been a television producer for more than 10 years. Primarily producing news and documentary, she has interviewed hundreds of people, from senators to paleontologists. She coordinated and produced political news for Germany’s largest media company, Pro7 and N24, and has written extensively for TV and video production companies.

Before joining 15 Minutes, she was an Associate Producer for National Geographic Television Specials. She also developed educational programming for National Geographic’s children’s division. Prior to that, Anne developed feature film scripts and acquired films for A-Pix Entertainment. She is a graduate of the University of Virginia, and lives in Washington DC with her husband John.

Susan Finkelpearl, Free Range Studios
  Susan works as the Online Strategy Director at Free Range Studios. She blends communications strategy with emerging web technologies to transform her clients' websites from static e-brochures into vibrant communities, where individuals gather and rally around issues they care about.
She has developed information architecture and guided the web design of sites including The Rockefeller Family Fund, National Parks Conservation Association, Sports4Kids, and the Center for Economic and Policy Research. Prior to joining Free Range in 2004, Susan racked up knowledge of today's most critical environmental and social issues at the Worldwatch Institute.

Her passion for community involvement comes from her years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Slovakia, where she established a youth center, taught English, and assisted community foundations with strategic planning and fundraising.

Susan is currently pursuing a Masters in communications with a concentration on digital technologies at The Johns Hopkins University. In her free time, Susan dabbles in organic gardening, and getting all the fresh air she can hiking, biking, climbing, and camping.

Eve Fox, M+R Strategic Services

  Eve Fox, Vice President of eCampaigns at M+R Strategic Services, plans and implements creative and effective online advocacy, outreach, fundraising and recruitment campaigns on behalf of a range of non-profit clients including the Save Darfur Coalition, American Rights at Work, Oxfam America, Defenders of Wildlife, and the ACLU.

She specializes in writing for the web and developing innovative strategies to help organizations streamline and strengthen their web presence, move policy, recruit supporters, educate the public, and raise money online.

Fox also created and manages the ProgressiveExchange, a rapidly growing online community of people using the Internet to further a variety of progressive causes and launched M+R’s data-driven article series in an effort to share information and best practices for this developing field with the public interest community.

Prior to joining M+R, Fox worked in women's health and environmental advocacy. She was also a member of the start-up communications team at Oceana, a new international ocean conservation and advocacy group, writing original copy for their web site, developing their image bank, and serving as Internet Activist Relationship Manager. Fox is a graduate of Wesleyan University.

Beth Kanter, Technology Consultant
  Beth Kanter is a trainer, coach, and consultant to nonprofits and individuals in effective use of technology. She has worked on projects that include: training, curriculum development, research, and evaluation.

Her expertise is how to use new web tools (blogging, tagging, wikis, photo sharing, video blogging, screencasting, social networking sites, and virtual worlds, etc) to support nonprofit.

She is an experienced coach to "digital immigrants" in the personal mastery of these tools. She is a professional blogger and writes about the use of social media tools in the nonprofit sector for social change. Check out her blog.

Laura Quinn, Idealware

 

As Idealware's Founder and Director, Laura S. Quinn directs research and writing to provide candid reports and articles about nonprofit software.

Prior to Idealware, Laura worked with Alder Consulting to help nonprofits create internet strategies, select appropriate software, and then build sophisticated websites on a limited budget.

She has also selected software, designed interfaces and conducted user research for multi-million dollar software and website implementations with such companies as Accenture and iXL. Laura is a frequent speaker and writer on nonprofit technology topics.In her spare time, she prepares for a new career as a homesteader with faithful practice in cooking, gardening, quilting, and weaving.

Alan Rosenblatt

  Alan Rosenblatt, Ph.D. is the Associate Director for Online Advocacy at Center for American Progress Action Fund. He is a frequent speaker and author on digital media, advocacy, and politics, including social networking, blogging, grassroots, and mobile advocacy strategies.
He is the founder of the Internet Advocacy Center; an adjunct professor at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and American Universities, where he teaches Media and Politics in the Digital Age, Internet Politics, Digital Political Strategy, and Internet Advocacy Communications; and a blogger at DrDigiPol.com and the award-winning TechPresident.com. Alan is also a founding team member of Media Bureau Networks (MBN), a pioneer in streaming media services; a contributing editor to Politics Online; and serves on the editorial boards of several scholarly journals dedicated to the study of the internet, politics, and government.

He taught Political Science at George Mason University for nine years, where, in 1995, he launched the first-ever cyberpolitics course. With MBN, he webcasted live coverage of the 2000 Presidential Conventions. In 2001, he served as Vice President for Online Advocacy Services division at Stateside Associates. From 2003 to 2005 he served as Director of Training Programs at e-advocates. Alan Rosenblatt has a Ph.D. in Political Science from American University, an M.A. in Political Science from Boston College, and a B.A. in Political Science and Philosophy from Tufts University. He lives in Arlington, Virginia.

Nancy Schwartz,
Communications Consultant

Ms. Schwartz shares her expertise in nonprofit marketing and communications by writing and publishing Getting Attention, (free, bi-monthly e-newsletter designed to help nonprofits succeed through effective marketing) and the Getting Attention blog.

A graduate of Brown University, Ms. Schwartz also holds a MBA in Marketing and Management from New York University. She serves as a volunteer trainer at New York City's Support Center for Nonprofit Management and a frequent conference speaker. Ms. Schwartz is also member of the New York Technical Assistance Providers Network and the Council on Foundations' Communications Network. She lives in the New York metropolitan area, where she enjoys time with family and friends, as well as knitting, photography, hiking and cooking. She is active in her synagogue, and serves on its Interfaith Committee.
